The future of journalism seems to be jeopardized by the way consumption is changing and the rapidity of this matter.

The way is so hard to capture people’s attention nowadays gives a lot to talk about. Everyday is more and more complex for journalists to connect with audiences, not only because they don’t want to dedicate enough time to be informed but also because their perception about the amount of participation on the news platforms they should have is going down.

According to the statistics, people now feel more confident participating in small and private news spaces, like WhatsApp. It’s also seen a huge polarization in political affairs in countries like the UK and US. Besides this, there has been a significant change in the apps people use to be informed, for example, Facebook remains the most popular one, however, the spread of TikTok and Instagram is growing considerably fast. We could also link this to the fact that people’s trust in news is decreasing in countries like Spain and France because of internal conflicts in each country.

However, these are not the only issues that should concern us right now, as the fast development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is also an important matter, as the fall of Google is to be considered because, the users of AI apps are asking factual questions, which is what people usually use Google for. Furthermore, if Google decides to change their search engine, so it responds as Chat GPT does, it could mean a huge complication for news agencies and journalism in general, because the link would be no longer provided and we wouldn’t be able to know where the information is coming from and so if we can trust it.

All of these data was shared with us last March 22nd by Eduardo Suarez, a senior journalist, head of editorial for the Reuters Institute. He also shared with us some of his life experience, as he has worked for important newspapers such as El Mundo and El Español and has also had the opportunity to be correspondent for said newspapers in New York, Brussels and London.
