This is what can be concluded from the speech of Eduardo Suarez, head of the editorial team in Reuters Institute of the Study of Journalism. In this meeting he explained the new trend in journalism but also the predictions ahead.

One of the main challenges that journalism is facing today and will be in the future, is the competition for attention against non-traditional media platforms. Some of them seem like news organizations but they are not. These sources lack credibility and integrity associated with traditional journalism. Such social media platforms and other online sources are increasing their spam of capturing audiences by using clickbait or even fake news, blurring lines between legitimate journalism and sensationalism.

Meanwhile, the participation in news is changing, due to the toxicity on the internet, the news interest of the audience is dropping, even avoiding news like 46% of the spanish population. Lastly, the trust in news is also decreasing by 20 points in Spain, according to the Reuters report. All these changes are making it difficult for journalists and publishers to reach the audience and gain their trust back.

As Eduardo Suarez said “we have journalism fighting for attention against things that seem as news and news organizations but they are not”. We are headed to a new era of media and technology that is going to renovate traditional journalism and evolve the ways in which news organizations reach audiences and give information.
