A change in news participation with a boom in the passive consumer

The different ways of interacting with news have been dissected by the Digital News Report  2023. Nowadays people have access to many digital global media, they can be involved in an active, passive or reactive way. 


Although the data has changed over the years, nowadays people are even more connected to information than in the past years. Different factors justify this “new normality”.

22% tend to interact in an active way by posting and commenting. A proportion of 31% read or share posts and finally 47% don't get involved. Apart from that, talking about news in a face to face situation continues being the most reported way of interacting with information. 





This study has discovered that men are the ones that participate more actively in news. Among them the main and repeated characteristics are: men with education, politically positioned  and interested in news. That’s why editors try to reach a target audience with these characteristics that undoubtedly can make their news reach other audiences. 


Finally, we can say that it is not that participation is diminishing, it is that it is changing due to the social networks platforms changing or limiting the interactions between users and users with news.
