The mistrust in news is getting as great as the importance of social media in our society.

Media are no longer trusted and news are no longer catchy enough to make people click a post and read a whole piece of news, written by a professional journalist for a real newspaper. Since social media started, its connection with news and information has been really tight. Newspaper started paying attention to search engines and a way to monetize the influx of people on the net. However people on the internet are no longer interested in news or do not trust what they read due to the appearance of AI or constant fake news that look for clickbait.

At the beginning of social media, Twitter became the fortress for political news and discussion, letting debates take place and deep stories to be told. However, with the passing of the years, social media has become the fortress for polarization and toxicity, where every one can judge what a journalist says, even if it is true. This has lead to the increase of news avoiders, people who use social media to avoid news and conventional media, and huge levels of mistrust. Of course, what mentioned before has displaced Twitter as the newsy one, instead young people now prefer Instagram or Tiktok, where information comes in a shorter format.

Last week we receive at University Carlos III from Madrid the visit from Eduardo Suarez, founder of El Español and currently head of editorial at Oxford Reuters Institute. He introduced this topic based on the 2023 Reuters Institute Report and also talked about the polarization of Spanish media. We could conclude that Internet has changed with the appearance of AI and, despite the accessibility to news, the interest rates are getting lower than ever.
