Avoidance of politics is frequently associated with cutting out perspectives that a person does not want to hear, but for several political activists, violent and dividing politics are the reason for the complete news disinterest. After dividing topic-based avoidance by political orientation, we found that Americans on the right actively avoid news on climate change five times more often than Americans on the left, and they avoid news about social justice problems like gender and race three times more often. News about crime, commerce, and finance tends to be avoided by leftists more than they are by rightists.
